Why does my washer NOT spin during last cycle all the time?

I have a HOTPOINT top loading washer. Sometimes, for no reason we can figure out, it will not spin on the last cycle. If we rearrange the load, rerun the rinse cycle most of the time it will then spin. I have replaced the timer and don't think it's the lid switch because it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I think it's a load balancing sensor however I can't find anything on line saying there even is such a sensor. Any help will b appreciated. Thanks!

@cherylfischer what exact model number is your washer?

The model is HTWP1000M0WW

I have same washer and it was the timer. I am an electrician by trade and watched it in operation. Motor spins one way for agitate and the other direction for spin. That is how the transmission knows what to do. The timer controls motor direction and on mine it was not starting the motor for spin cycle.

The lid switch is wired to motor as well. However if the lid switch is bad it will NOT agitate either. Mine was agitating every time but not spinning.

Something else to think about when diagnosing this problem. Contacts in timer get pitted over time from normal use. Hope this info helps someone else.

Chosen Solution

Just go for the main suspect!

https://www.repairclinic.com/RepairHelp/...

Cause 1

Lid Switch Assembly

The lid switch assembly prevents the washer from spinning when the lid is open. If the lid switch assembly fails, the washer will not spin. To determine if the lid switch assembly is defective, use a multimeter to test the lid switch for continuity. If the lid switch does not have continuity, replace it.

If the lid switch is faulty wouldn't it fail all the time and not just part of the time?

by

Well I have heart failure but I managed to write this just before I dropped................

It's a $15 part, and your best bet for a fix.

Thank you for your input. My original research led me to the lid switch, however logic tells me that usually hardware fails all the time while software /sensors fail intermittently. I'll replace the lid switch and see if that solves the problem.

Ok. I ordered the lid switch assembly, the protector lid switch and the washer tub dampening dampening strap. Should receive by 11-4. I'll post my results. Ordered from ApplicancePartsPros.com.
