MacBook 1286A - Black Screen; replaced screen assembly - still broken

Hi,

Last week my 2012 MacBook Pro's screen died. I brought it into the local Apple store, and was told that the backlight was broken - we did the flashlight test. I ordered a new (used) screen, and after replacing it - it's still a black screen with no backlight.

I've:

-reset the SMC

-reset the PRAM

Nada. The keyboard lights up, but the apple on the back of the screen does not.

Any ideas??

Which model do you have a 2012 13" or a 15"?

It's a 15 incher, Dan. Thanks!

Hook it up to an external display first and let's see what we get. Did Apple run any specific tests or was it just a best guess diagnosis?

I'll bring it to work tomorrow to try that out - will report back in the morning. Thank you!

Forgot to say - I believe it was a 'best guess' diagnosis.

@trumpetcharger backlight issues are 99% of the time related to the logic board or a damaged LCD cable on newer models; you only see no backlight issues caused by the LCD if it has had liquid spilt on it the majority of the time.

I would recommend taking it to an independent repairer who has a variety of test parts, and can determine the cause of the issue. Ideally it is best to take it somewhere where they do logic board repairs; since it is highly likely this is the cause.

Ok - hooking it up to an external display does work.

Reece - thank you. I'm guessing the Apple store would charge a ridiculous amount for a repair.

This may beg the question - on a 5 year old machine - is it worth it to get it fixed?
