SSD drives and blades and using APFS

Apple File System (APFS)

I've seen @danj mention a new formatting method for SSD drives and know nothing about it. Is it used on hybrid drives, standard 2.5" drives, blades, logic board integrated drives, RAID arrays or a fusion set up? What are the benefits, drawbacks, when to use and not use?

Where do I find this formatting utility, will it (or is it) in Sierra Disk Utility? Will it be in High Sierra?

Is it to be on iOS devices and/or Macs? How is it an improvement over HFS+?

Please, somebody teach us ;-)

So, I quickly pulled up the wiki page on this new file system, here, to get the basic idea. Then I found this page from Apple that goes into detail.

Yes I had read the wiki, but I was hoping someone had actually used it and had some experience with it.

Oh, ok, then :)) I've never owned an Apple product in my life so that should give you an idea about my experience ;)

@alexniculescu - Good research! And knowing your limits is also good.

@mayer - I have it running on my 2011 27" iMac.

I have a dual drive setup, boot drive is a Samsung 500 GB 850 EVO and a 1 TB Seagate HDD.

The SSD is what is running APFS the HD is still running HFS+ gen3. It was very easy to update the drive to APFS. So far I've not had any issues with it running High Sierra Beta.

I haven't done any testing on it yet to see if it's faster as I'll wait till I get the gold release of High Sierra.

Is that a fusion drive set up? You said you updated the date, I'm assuming you had to wipe the drive to do that? Is it available outside of the High Sierra Beta as a stand alone?

No, it's a dual drive config (not a Fusion Drive set). It's a function of Disk Utility to update the drive. At this point I would only alter SSD drives it's not intended for HD's (or Fusion Drives) from what I've been lead to believe.

You'll should wait for the gold release which should be soon (ETA October). There are some issues with the beta with normalization and foreign language support so I won't run it on a mission critical system.
