HDMI port can it be connected to a set top box

I intend changing my MACBOOK PRO can I connect to the set top box through the thunderbolt option to HDMI PORT and record a T.V PROGRAMME.Distance will be 3 meters between the set top box and the laptop.Do I need a hardware if so please specify.Thank you.Narayanan lakshmanan INDIA

Options

To do this you will need a capture card such as an Elgato this is because to record a tv or any other output you need a device which has a input neither Mac or most laptops come with a HDMI in.
