Kennmore 400 washer starts to drain before wash cycle starts

My washer will start filling and then start draining before wash cycle starts. I have to press the pause/cancel button to stop the draining and restart the cycle. After doing this the washer will fill and go through the wash cycle as normal. This is wasting a lot of water and I'm looking for an explanation as to what could be wrong.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

new information, this could be coincidental but the draining seems to happen only when using the cold or warm water temp settings. If I use hot water the load will start up like normal.

Most likely you have a siphoning issue. The drain hose is probably stuck to far down the stand pipe. The next time that you find it draining water out as it is filling start raising the drain hose up slowly until it breaks the siphon and then secure the drain hose at the height. Also the drain hose should have some type of air gap where it fits into the stand pipe. It should not have an air tight fit.

we have never moved the drain pipe, why would it suddenly be an issue now? Just curious

faerie, I don't know your exact circumstances. You might look at oldturkeys answer first.

faerie.tattoo since it works after you restart the cycle my money is on the drain pump being the problem. Depending on your exact model it could be that the drain pump has a lever that swaps from drain-out to re-circulation, which gets stuck or a bad timer/control panel.
