Optical Drive Does Not Recognize CD/DVD

My optical drive was replaced fairly recently and worked fine up until a few days ago. It opens and closes fine via the eject key on the keyboard, but when I insert a CD and try to use an application like Toast or Jam, the CD is not recognized. I also tried a music CD via iTunes, same problem. Is there a diagnostic utility that might give me a clue? (Other than dismantling, checking connections, etc.)?

Thanks,

Edward

Please give us the model number of the drive. Did you replace it? What was the source of the part? Are you trying to use DVDs in it?

Which version of Toast are you using and what OS X?

Sorry for delay I was traveling. The drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW, model DVR-106 D. I was using Roxio Jam 6.0.3 and trying to burn an audio onto a blank CD-R. The OS X is 10.5.8. I have tried the following:

1.) Inserted several different new blank CD-R's. Jam indicated that there was no CD in the drive.

2.) I inserted a music CD and tried to rip tracks. iTunes did not recognize it.

3.) I inserted a commercial DVD, it played fine.

4.) Tried again with a blank Maxell CD-R. This time Jam recognized it but when I tried to burn the CD, I got a Sense key media error.

5.) Tried again with a commercial music CD, sounded like the drive made various attempts to read it, then ejected it.

The optical drive was installed by an authorized Apple Repair shop ~3 - 4 years ago.

Thanks,

Edward
