Most likely
LCD display or video data cable failure. Try an easy solution first: reset the PRAM then the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If the problem persists connect to an external display - if the problem follows it's the VGC (Video Graphics Chip/Controller) if it doesn't one of the first two are culprits.
