Apple Support diagnosed proximity sensor problem

I got an iPhone 6s+ for free from my aunt but the screen simply wouldn't auto adjust brightness. I tried a lot of calibration and "fixes" online and never got it working. I sent it to an Apple Authorized Repair Center but they claimed that my phone has been taken apart and they'll charge me around 400USD for a refurbished phone(I still have a month of warranty left). Now my question is is the sensor tied to the screen assembly? Will I be able to fix it by replacing the screen or is it even easier to fix the sensor. Thanks

But from the comment I've read under the guide people have brightness based issues after doing the repair(calibration issues I believe)do you have any ideas why or how to fix? Thanks

The "calibration" is a lot more of an apple scare tactic, than anything else. What do you mean "auto brightness"? Lemme look further into this...

Yep! Just tested mine! It's totally the front camera flex!

Your proximity sensor is bad. If you know little bit about phones. You can change it by yourself. Just buy a new proximity sensor flex and use the right tool to open the device and change it. It should solved the issue.
