Wrist Velcro Straps on my Patagonia Shell?

The wrist velcro straps on my Patagonia Shell are failing. Granted, my jacket is ~12 years old! The velcro fastener part still works fine, but the surface material is disintegrating and smears black goo all over my hands when it gets wet. It's icky and gross.

Should I bother returning it to Patagonia for them to repair or try fixing it myself?

Answer this question I have this problem too

I'd take it into a fabrics store and find the oldest lady in the place. Some of these ladies have decades of experience. They can sell you what you need and advise of possible impending problems and if it is feasible to even attempt the repair.
