Extra SSD Not Recognized

iMac mid 2011 EMC 2429

I just finished install a WD Blue SATA 6Gb/s 2.5 Inch 500GB Internal SSD Solid State Drive (WDS500G1B0A) in my iMac in the optical drive bay. I booted the computer and it is not being recognized. Any ideas as to what's going on? It's pretty simple as far as connecting the cables. I followed both he iFixit and MacSales install instructions.

Did you test it before putting it in?

When you say not recognised, what exactly happens?

Also, I think you have to partition it / format it and then eventually do a recovery on this new SSD.

How did my local Llano wine compare?

Just got the USB to SATA cable today. The MBP recognized the drive and it did say I needed to format it. So at least the drive works and has been formatted. I have OWC's SATA cable on order and will arrive Thursday. If that doesn't work, then I think it might be safe to assume that the logic board's extra SATA port is bad. If I encounter that issue I'll plug the HD into the extra one just to make sure. If it is the logic board, then I guess I could go the external route as a boot drive.

Not mentioned in my original post, I'm also waiting on a new display data cable as it appears I damaged it when removing the display. Fingers crossed I only damaged the cable and not the port on the logic board. If that's the case, I'll probably just suck it up and save a few more buck and buy a 5k iMac and sell this one for cheap and let someone else fix that. It works fine (I'm on it now using a 2nd display).

Here's the guide on adding a second 2.5" drive without going to the optical bay:

Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Drive Kit (HDD or SSD)

You will need to run Disk Utilities and format the drive GUID the Mac OS X to use it.

Mayer: thanks for the guide, but that is the guide to add a second drive in the optical bay which is what I used.

As far a Llano Estacado wine? It varies. Many of it I like but not all of it.

Paul Jacques: The SSD does not show in Disk Utility. Because of that I can't do anything else.

Dan: I have no way to test it without doing the install. I don't have an external case or a USB to SATA cable in which to test the drive. Having said that I did just purchase a USB to SATA cable from Amazon to test the drive. That will allow me to test it. At least I will know if it's the cable from iFixit or not.

If it's the cable from ifixit I hope they will send a replacement. Otherwise my other option is to get the owc version. Either way I've spent extra money on another cable in order to test the hard drive which I guess I should have done anyway, but I've never had a need to do this as this is the first time I've messed with an internal drive.

On a separate note I still have to wait on a new display cable as it appears I've damaged it while removing it from the logic board. I'm hoping it's only the cable and not the port on the logic board. That cable won't be here until next week. Thank goodness I bought a second display a couple months ago.

At least with the sata cable I can at least work on cloning my hard drive to the SSD to prep it to be my boot drive while waiting for the display cable.
