displaying the error message

My computer is displaying the error message operating system not found when I turn my computer on and then it shuts down. Why would this be happening

This is a question, not an answer. Also it would be doing that because your hard drive is dead or the operating system is corrupt. Take it to your local computer repair shop. They will be able to fix it for you.

stacmarie29 I do agree with that it sounds like a HDD failure but I am not convinced you need to take it to a repair shop. Since this questions was converted from an "Answer", we need to know for sure what make and model your computer is.

stacmarie29 you will have to try and access your BIOS. There you check to see if your harddrive is still recognized. Also, check the boot order and either change it to optical drive or USB and use a booting CD or USB drive to see if you can start your computer in an OS. I would recommend a Live-CD of something like Puppy-Linux. You can run that of a CD and it will allow you to check and see if it can access your HDD and the files on that. If it cannot, than you will most likely have to replace the HDD. Once we know what make and model your computer is, I am sure we can get you to repair it yourself.
