Why is my computer getting so hot?

The computer keeps reaching 100 degrees after I play for less than an hour. I've already tried placing it on a cooling pad, which worked with some of my other computers. I'm worried that these temperatures might cause an internal error with the computer.

I just purchased ROG GL503V, 2 weeks ago. The laptop temperature rise up to 75 Celsius. I never even download or play any games. Just normal office use.

Because these computers are junk. I have been buying them for years thinking they are good. Then I spend 20 hours updating drivers and modifying GPU, cpu and more. Simply because ASUS is to lazy to put out good product that doesnt need tons of tweaking. My Omen didnt need a thing and out performs my 503.

I'm starting to think your way about Asus. I bought asus gl502vm, would shutdown during games. I repaste with mx-4 and k5-pro. Booted up, ran valley benchmark . It then shut off after I heard a muted pop. Then would not boot. Main board shows no visible damage, and capacitors looked fine. Don't know what's wrong. Disconnected battery before pasting...

I have a GL522VL with Core i7 processor. Overheating to the max. Disassembled and in removing the heat sink found three of the four anchors that screw down the heat sink to the processor had come loose from the motherboard. The heat sink was not being held down tightly to the CPU, so it was not absorbing and carrying away the heat. I'm going to try super glue to fasten the anchors, but this is not a good reflection on Asus.

download Intel extreme tuning and change the core voltage OFFSET to -.080 or -.100 my temps are now at 79 to 85 c and it didn’t have any effect on my FPS just runs way cooler. this is a common issue on this laptop and ASUS calls this normal range at 100c!!! its way to hot

If it's 100 degrees Fahrenheit that's absolutely fine and there is nothing wrong with that, if its 100 degrees Celsius, that's not great but for a high performance gaming laptop, it should be fine. Try turning down your game settings so the laptop doesn't have to work as hard and thus can work at a cooler temperature. If its still at 100 degrees Celsius and you turned down the settings report back here and ill give you other options.

Also, do you hear the fans spinning, and what program are you getting the temperature measurements from?

100 degress c is not good for your notebook and your performance will suffer. It may even cause damage over time to you notebook.

I have the same notebook and went through an RMA process with ASUS to fix the problem of over heating and poor game performance. I sent the computer to them and got it back without anything fixed and no info on if they even did anything to it.

So I took matters into my own hands and removed the bottom cover of the laptop. Sure enough I was getting better performance and cooler temps by 10 degrees c!

It is a design issue with the laptop and more info and solutions can be found on this forum:

I have one too its just manufacturing error.

What you can do

1. Undevolt CPU with Intel XTU

2. Undervolt GPU with afterburner or asus tuning utility

3. Replace Thermal paste

4. Seal Third fan in pc to get better airflow

5.Drill Holes in bottom of pc

And best one is just to ask for refund if its not late. :D

I’ve owned one of these for a month or so now, and I’ve found that the trick is managing performance vs heat. If you just max all of your graphics settings and have it plugged in, it will get hot and loud just like a desktop graphics card would. Note that the nvidia controls by default have Plugged in and Battery settings.

In my opinion, this is a great computer with a bit too much power that you have to know how to manage. (I like that)

You don’t need to drill holes in it :)

Hi Sydney,

Generally when using a laptop, you would want to avoid the bottom of the laptop from touching any material like a blanket or like your lap or anything that would stop air from going through the fans.

The ventilation could be blocked, which is bad, the air circulation is very important for cooling the internal hardware.

The laptop sucks fresh cool air and the hot air blows out. If there is a soft cushion (bed) or other material (not including rigid material) it blocks the vents which results in high temperature of the hardware of the laptop, this can make the computer 60 degree celsius and higher.

Higher temperatures can damage the internal hardware and decrease its battery life permanently, so try not to over work it :)
