old computer freezes at the very beginning where it says compact?

ok as i said it freezes in the very beginning when it says compact and it goes to the boot screen but i never gets past the compact screen it tells me 31mb ok and freezes. what do i do.. i tried cleaning the system ive tried removing every thing but the hard drive and monitor.. ive even tried changing memory stick.. its an old computer that runs windows xp but now does nothing??

Check on your system BIOS it sounds like an awful low amount of memory. You might hang up because of that. The way I understand it, you do not make it to the OS but hang up at the very initial screen when your computer starts? To access the BIOS tap on the F!) button when you see the Compaq screen when rebooting. Also, if I remember right Compaqs have an extra 8-12mb partition that u don't normally see called the diagnostics partition and it must be the first partition you put on. So if F10 does not work you are missing that partition.

What Compaq do you have like what make and model? Good Luck...got to love the Legacy devices and computers...
