Unlock iPhone via iTunes

I may have dreamt this or something but I'm sure i read somewhere that since 2012 in the UK you can unlock your phone to any carrier by doing a restore through iTunes?

Is this correct or i really need to pay for it?

A carrier locked phone is often one that is under a contract (you don't own the phone yet). Once the contract is paid off they can release the phone (IMEI) so you can sign up with another carrier.

Talk with your carrier to see what your options are. Some will release your phone early if you've been good with your payments and don't owe that much in the contract.
