Why can I not do anything?

I can't do anything that involves the screen..I can push the home button that will then bring me to the lock screen but I can't push the numbers to unlock it. I've tried soft reset and it tells me if I want to power down witch I cannot do for I can't swipe the screen. Please help!

Hold the Power and the Home button to force restart the phone, then power it back on.

If this does not fix the problem, then you may have a broken digitiser and you will need to take steps to replace it.
