1. Put the drill in reverse.

2. Set torque to highest setting.

3. Put one of 3 things on the chuck:

a.) Vise Grips

b.) Channel Lock Pliers

c.) Rubber Jar Lid Opener

Turn on the drill and the bit WILL POP RIGHT OUT!

fionashanahan, If really stuck, give a touch of penetrate oil down the jaws of the chuck, put the drill in reverse, firmly grip the chuck with gloved hand and gently squeeze the trigger up the point that you cannot hold on. If it still doesn't budge and you're not able to hold the chuck against the force of the drill. Get 2 strap wrenches(they will not damage the chuck) one to hold the chuck and one to hold the collar, may need an assistant. With the strap wrenches both in position, adjust the slack out of them firmly hold the collar with the one wrench and turn the other in counter clockwise direction to break chuck free. Posted a couple video links below that may help. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Thanks but tried everything and no luck

Why on earth do we have these chucks when this problem appears so common- nothing wrong with the chuck key chuck!! Also should not have bought a Cheap Chinese Drill - previous (chuck key) drill was really good but was stolen and I just needed a cheap fix; now I’m paying for it in blood sweat and tears.....

I have a key type Chuck stuck open I've tried vise and channel lock, vise grips, broke all the teeth on my key and it's still stuck. It's been soaked with PB Blastern cleaned with carb spray, and soaked again with PBB. Tapped the side of Chuck with small copper faced hammer and tapped on each tooth with a mild steel probe and hammer. It's still stuck! I've noticed that almost all the questions I've seen have been hammerdrills.

Check warranty first, My Ryobe p252 was out of warranty, and other answers methods no joyp. I had to disassemble the drill and remove the gear housing down to the sheilded bearings around shaft. (leave ball, and roller bearings in chuck alone and in place) Once machined shaft end is exposed table clamp it, and use channel locks to turn chuck counter clockwise. If chuck ball, and roller bearings came loose, dismantle chuck from screw located inside chuck mouth to reseat.

I lubed the chuck with WD40, then held the chuck and drilled in reverse a few times. This didn't do it until I tapped on each jaw with a chisel and hammer (in the axial direction). This unlocked the chuck.
