Water Damage + Cracked Screen

I managed to score an ipod at a theme park for $2 ($1 for two attempts). I dropped it and cracked the top of the screen, but it worked just fine. That is, until I was ironing and listening to it at the same time. I got water on it and in the crack. I put it in rice and it seemed to work. Eventually, the screen became unresponsive and now it will not even turn on. What could be the problem, and how can I solve it? I don't want to have to take it apart unless i absolutely have to.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Actually, the best thing to do to clean logic boards is to use a soft bristle tooth brush, DISTILLED water, and dish soap. After a good scrub, let dry for at least 3 days before reassembly. Make sure you get any corrosion real good, and let it dry at least 3 days. Battery is the first to go, but it requires soldering - not saying a novice or noob cant do it, but its difficult and will require a magnifying glass and a steady hand. I would go with changing the screen first though, before getting into all that. could just be the screen that got damaged (well, more damaged than it already was).Theres a good repair guide on this site, good luck!

You are right. I use the alcohol in the acute phase to displace the water. Your distilled water and soap in combination with a brush should remove any subsequent corrosion. Thanks for the tip. Great job...

the thing is, my parents aren't too happy, so they said wait until after christmas. I'm shopping all my options, so to speak, first, but i will clean the boards and try to replace both the screen and the battery. would either of you happen to know of a good diagnostics place, or is that not a good idea?

The only ones I have favorably heard of are http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/vip/in... and http://www.ipodjuice.com/apple-iphone-re... and in the meantime...have a very merry Christmas :)

herbiefreak, sorry to hear about your misfortune. There are plenty of other people on here who experienced the same. Just do a quick search under water damage. Anyhow, number 1 advise. DO NOT TURN IT ON UNTIL IT IS ABSOLUTELY DRY. Give it plenty of time to dry out. Leave it in uncooked rice for a couple of days ( I like to always make sure that it is guaranteed to be dry) you may even have to change some of the rice if it gets to moist. Since you do not want to open it you may have to try to turn it on, WHEN you are CERTAIN that it is dry. Now if it does not turn on you will probably have to open it up. My first step then would be to replace the Battery. The iPod batteries do absolutely not like water and can react volatile with it. If and when you have to open it iPod Touch 2nd Generation

I would try and use some isopropyl alcohol and a little soft brush and try to clean the logic board with it. My concern is always corrosion of the components that might lead to failure at a later date. But start with the battery first if you have to. Good luck to you

thanks. I've done all that, turning it on and all. It did work, and that's what my issue is, up until taking it apart. I will try that. thanks again.

Sorry just wondering if you exchanged the battery. I know it seems like a long shot but who knows. Cheapest part to replace for now and a place to start.

I severely cracked my iPhone 6, then after swimming I put my phone into my bag with my damp towel, whentrying to turn on my phone I had no luck. After already water damaging my first phone beyond repair I decided not to try turning it on again, but a friend of mine believed they could turn it on and the screen flashed blue then fried it >:( The next day my alarm went off but the screen did not respond and when holding down the home button, the vibration for Siri works but still no response from the screen. Left it to dry for a couple days just incase, not sure wether to get a new screen and see if it works or if it would just turn into a money pit. Advice? :(

I have same problem in that i got water on the cracked part of the screen. It still turns on and is functional but the touch sensitivity is broken, my solution was to get a new ipad and transfer a back up to it. The problem is for me to make the back up i would have to select the "Agree" notification that pops up when plugging into a computer. I can not do this due to the touch screen being broken. Is there a way to make a backup without having to get the computer to "trust" the device? Any help is greatly appreciated.
