How to fix the spinning wheel?

So does anyone know anything about how to fix the infamous "spinning wheel" on Macs? It is very frustrating and rendering our MacBook Pro almost inoperable. It has 1TB SSD hdrive, 16GB RAM, with a 2.6GHz Intel i7. I am running OS X Yosemite. I have already checked the activity monitor, checked the startup programs, and checked the functionality of the hard drive. All seem to be working optimally. Any suggestions?

What you don't have is a new 2012 Hard drive/IR cable.

Then put red tape on either side of the cable as it comes over that last step to prevent the bottom from hitting it and damaging it, thus causing data transfer issues and beach balls. What's you exact machine?
