NO, DO NOT REPLACE THE HOME BUTTON ON IPHONE 7.

Touch ID is not repairable whatsoever on any iOS devices because the communication between the sensor and the CPU is encrypted with a unique key. Since iPhone 7, there is no mechanical switch under the home button, the pressing is sensed by force sensors under the button, the force data goes through the same encrypted link. Replacing the button will destroy both Touch ID and button pressing.

So the replacement button is absolutely useless, you MUST send the phone back to Apple for repairs.

With all due respect that Tom that is incorrect the home button will do all functions that the original will except Touch ID which is programmed to the motherboard. It does not have a mechanical function however it replaces the physical characteristics with an electrical signal and haptic feedback. The only part that is encrypted is the Touch ID not the actual act of pushing the button. Might want to do a little research on that. I see you have a high rep score but what you are saying does not make sense. If the button would not work I am quite sure THIS website would not sell a replacement stating it would perform all functions EXCEPT Touch ID.

As it happens, this site has claimed a lot of things that turned out to be wrong many times. It may be out of coincidence that the iPhone 7 home button 'happens' to be out of stock for the time being.

Based on what I've seen, replacement button is simply dead. Even original buttons sometimes die after screen replacement for inexplicable reasons. Home button is fragile and I do not recommend DIY repairing something this fragile and irreplaceable.

I do agree with the last part of your comment, there have been significant issues with the new home buttons not working. I would not suggest getting the home button off Amazon or Ebay, I would get it from this website as they will warrantee it. To get it to work there are some deeper troubleshooting that I don't want to get into here because this forum is for people looking to do DIY type repairs and it would be getting into the weeds. If you want we can talk about it in the pro forum that way we can get some other inputs from shop owners.

Well I'm still asking a pro to see if iPhone 7 home buttons are indeed hopeless. My hunch is that it won't work because on devices with Reachability, replacement buttons won't have double tap to pull the screen down feature due to failed secure link. iPhone 7 home button actually requires both skin contact and force pressure to register a press, so it is very likely that new buttons won't even register a press at all.

As a iPhone parts supplier, we would like to tell you the reality:

The home button of iPhone 7 can NOT be replaced or changed. If you replace it, the new home button will be totally dead. New home button will NOT have returning to homepage function, let along the Touch ID / fingerprint sensor.

Even if you buy 100pcs iPhone 7 new home button to try one by one. I can say all the 100pcs home button will Not work.

Don't waste your time. We have tried everything, analyzed the technologies behind it and came to the conclusion that there is NOTHING you can do.

@rajeshree Yes the home button will function however the Touch ID will not, just like the iPhone 5s-6s the home button is matched to the logic board. You put a new one on Touch ID is lost. Hope this helped

So can I set a new touch id?

by

No once you replace the home button you will not be able to set Touch ID. Touch ID only works with the original home button that came with the phone. The new one will only function as a home button.

No, iPhone 7 home button does not have a mechanical switch, everything goes through the encrypted link so if you replace the home button, the button is only useful as a space filler.

After confirming with G-Lon, unfortunately you do lose every function on replacement iPhone 7 home button. Resetting the home button function requires Apple internal server authorization so only official repair centers can do that.
