I have 4 gig 2nd gen ipod mini with a new battery that functions fine when in a dock or connected to power. When removed from power it shuts down and not boot up. Ipod showed "charged" when left overnight in dock.
Is this a good question?

So... when the iPod needs the battery.. it dies... Sounds like that "new" battery is dead. Try to warranty it.
What happened to the old battery?

I will try to take it back and swap it for a new one.
The old battery had about 35 minutes of run life so it got recycled as soon as I got the new one.

I go with a dead battery or poor connection. Not sure if the iPod mini has issues like the iPod video with the charging circuitry. Replace it first and see what happens. Good luck and let us know.

Exchanged the battery (no charge it was under warrenty) for a new one and it is working just fine.
Next time I will save the old battery until I confirm the replacement is working.
