How to repair color lines and patches obscuring screen?

Roughly three quarters of the laptop screen is obscured with a plaid like pattern - thread lines of colors and gray patches. Some jagged gray on lower right tell-tales where the machine came in contact with door frame as it was carried through one room to another. Blue Apple icon, Dock and some other command bars can be accessed, programs may opened but then going any further, if command can be reached, results in no response; tiny scroll arrows that usually appear above & below blue scroll bar are not there.

iPhoto, for example, can be opened but thats it.

"What you see is what you get!"(Flip Wilson);

no scrolling or opening "last 12 months" or any other file options respond. iTunes, same idea, I cannot command the "party shuffle" or any other option to access music. The main screen has files that I can open but little access is available if I cannot scroll around.

Is this a matter of replacing the screen, only?

First you should connect your MBP to an external monitor and check if the video is normal on the external. If so that means that your GPU (graphic processor unit) is ok. If you get the same video then you need to replace the logic board.

Second, remove the MBP top case and try to reseat the LVDS (video) cable in its socket. It could be a bad cable connection (to the logic board or to the LCD panel) or a faulty LVDS cable.

Third, the LCD panel electronics can be in trouble (I would suspect this is the problem). If so you need a new LCD panel or a full screen assy. Try to apply pressure around the screen bezel and check if there's a change in the video onscreen image.
