The screen is black

The screen is black, but if adjusted up and down it will ocationally come to life ( with a number of greenish horizontal lines) but it must stay in that position if you want to work it.

The computer itself is working ok (green lights coming on in numbers and capåital keys, I saved the most important documents to another Mac via T-start and a Firewire cable.

Will a new cable to the screen ( oh -boy) solve the problem ?

The reed switch cable (integrated to the inverter cable) is cut out in the ibook right hinge causing an intermittent backlight failure when moving the display up and down. Don't play too much with the display until you replace the cable cause the cable could short in the hinge and damage the logic board.

I think so, it sounds like the inverter cable needs replacing
