Apple's RAM recommendations are based on chips available at the time, and are often not accurate. Better to check using the free MacTracker program, on everymac.com, or using something like Other World's configurator at http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/index.cf...

you can install 4GB (2 x 2GB modules) in this model MacBook Pro (aka Late-2006 series MacBook Pro), but only ~3GB will be recognized and used by the system.

this is because part of the 4GB memory space is reserved & used by certain system functions. I have this particular model 2.33GHz 15" MBP with 2x2GB installed and can verify this is true.

I have a late 2006 model A1211 2.16GHz intel core 2 duo running lion and 4gb of ram I have two 2gb cards in it works great!

Ignote Bac's follow up answer.

Just because the system dosn't show up doesn't mean it's not being utilized.

Use 2x2gb in order to use dual channel mode correctly in a ddr2 system like this, otherwise his 3gb suggestion will run much slower.
