Acer Predator G9-792 upgrading screen from fullHD to 4k

Hello

Here's my issue: I want to upgrade my screen from FHD to UHD on a G9-792 and since I see both 4k and 2k versions on the market, I think its possible.

I've did some googling and found out that:

- FHD pannel is: LP173WF4-SPF1, and ebay sellers state its has a 30 pins eDP connector.

-UHD pannel is: B173ZAN01.0 (AUO109B) and it has a 40 pins connector.

I've did some further research by partially disassembling my laptop and here's what I see inside - it actually has a 40 pin display connector on the motherboard while my display is FHD. Thus I'm not sure if 4k model will work with it.

To be consistent, here's a pic http://storage3.static.itmages.com/i/16/...

Please advice.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Thanks for your information.

A few days ago, I bought an Acer Predator 17, turned it on, and noticed a problem with lcd screen. So, as the laptop has no guaranty, and I like to fix things myself, I decided to disassemble the laptop and change the lcd screen with a new one. But couldn't find any screw on the lid. It's appreciated if you tell me how did you open it?

Thanks a lot.

You don't even need a screw driver. Use credit card to remove the frame around your screen. Then you'll get access to the bolts which holds the display.

Thanks Dmitry

will answer myself. I've bought the pannel. I've bought the cable. Attached it. I saw the bios logo and setup showing ok so I've bolted all together. Afterwards I've figured out that after any software tries to change screen resolution it just shows blank screen.

- on ubuntu - it shows black screen but its possible to adjust brightness. grub works fine. with nomodeset option you can boot it but you'll loose brightness controls and you can't alter panel resolution. xrandr reports 1920x1080 max resolution for it (I have an external display to check that) and 0mm x 0mm screen physical dimensions - seems display is not fully supported.

-on windows - it will boot fine on clean win10 setup and will show you 4k resolution. You can install nvidia driver and it will still work. But after installing intel one - it will show you black screen.

So its just initialized improperly by UEFI or there's something else to do with it.

There is G9-792 with a screen like that so the bios v1.05 should be compatible. Any ideas appreciated

just in case: don't put it into legacy mode - you'll see no bios setup to revert it. Will have to attach back the old panel to be able to siwtch it to EFI back

Hello Dmitry thanks so much for your posts. I am trying to see if I can do the same for Nitro VN7 793G FHD to UHD. I am somewhat puzzled by the motherboard connector as all I can see are wires running from the corners but not sure if they go into the panel or are antenna cables etc. The panel I will use is the same as the one you used (correct for my model and is the same as on yours) but I am not clear on the connections. Do you have any other pictures? I saw the one you posted but because it taken so close I cannot understand where it is located. Appreciate if you have any other photos to guide me. Thanks!

Also if you have any photos of your cable that would be helpful. Thanks. (understand the 30pin, 40 pin difference but just cannot visualize it or find it-maybe I need to take the lcd panel off and turn it to see it.

by

Sorry Dmitri, one more comment here (question) is the uhd (or fhd as case may be) cables are not long enough to route through the hinges into the motherboard (see picture for uhd cable although for vn7-792g) By motherboard do you mean video board (not talking of Nvidia board but the graphics processing area) that is in the lcd cover? Thanks (guess that is what I am confused about-also) thanks and sorry for multiple messages.

by

Hello Dmitry hope you see my messages...I managed to figure out the connection but the laptop will only power up on external power (disconnected the battery during the whole process and reconnected it-tried twice) and then screen is blank. The external monitor output works though. EDID? how do I fix this? I will check the display connection again (the motherboard connection was not correct-I fixed that as the connectors were not at all engaged). Suspect it is EDID or maybe the display connection is loose (but wondering why it won't start on battery and needs external power) Thanks

by

Well now the battery works too! super!

regarding battery issue - predator has a mini switch from the the back cover side. while its open - it will start on AC power only. check your board - it may have the same switch.

regarding your cable - google which cable 4k model should use and buy the exact cable which fits your model.

regarding your display - the chance its a broken EDID is very low. also it was impossible to reflash that with i2c tools like its usually possible (its possible to read but not to write it) so I had to take it to a good service in my city (I was not able to find a proper one from the first attempt - some people do not realize EDP has no direct connection to EDID EEPROM and it took some time to find a guy who had a service manual access and an appropriate tool to do that).

Just saw your message now. About an hour back I got it to work...duh...I had not attached the connector to the screen properly. Don't know how many times I connected reconnected both ends. Used the cable for the VN7 792G (bend is opposite but it fits and long enough-canceling my order for the 793G specific cable as very hard to find and backordered in Europe)...discovered a Youtube video where maybe the only instance where the video creator focuses on the connection part to the panel (he has an Aspire 5 or some other model) and says it is a common mistake. Found that video when I discovered the FHD also was not working (wondering if cable or panel or something else) Without BIOS screen too as it will not show up on external monitor (but then read battery disconnect resets BIOS-not sure) But it works now. Except battery again is not working even with reset. Might try a BIOS reset once all buttoned up. In the end, smoother than expected but took a long time because am not good with these fine attachments.

by

so now have the impossible to find VN7 793G UHD! (verified all works) in the USA (only very expensive ones in Europe/Australia-panel I got was original AUO and not a compatible-perfect colors etc) Will post more once I get it all working. Thanks-your success post on the Predator gave me the courage to open the laptop up (was sitting on the FHD model and the UHD screen for a few days)-there was always the chance the 792 would not work like 793 and then the cable was from 792. Thanks!!

by

one cool change (personal preference) would be to change the red backlight of keyboard to white (someone has posted this on ytube but not shown how--done on a vn7 791g I think...must be a filter or a led change guessing)

by

glad you succeeded as well.

next step: consider trying hackintosh on it :) http://thcc.name reports predator G9-792 is running ok. if you'll succeed - you'll get a non-exisiting macbook pro 17' computer with a perfect 4k screen at funny price.

by

Dmitry ,

Thank you for your write up

i have Acer PREDATOR 17 G9-793-79V5

The 4k display is 40 pin connector

do i need to buy a new video cable too ?

Can you please share where i can buy online- what is the laptop end of connector Thank you

Also, i did not understand the flashing using i2c tools, does this involve software writing to memory

Thank you

Your current FullHD cable is 40 pin (motherboard side) => 30 pin (display side)

You need a 40=>40 one, part number is 50.Q04N5.015 - you can get that from amazon, ebay or... I've just ordered mine in the nearest laptops repairing workshop.

Regarding panels - BEWARE OF THE FAKE AUO panels! Ask seller if its a genuine AUO. Mine has awfull colors, I'm looking where to get the original one. I've borrowed one from my friend's alienware - it looks perfect.

Regarding flashing - you don't need that, my panel had a defective EDID. Its just a bolt-in upgrade.

Also there is a compatible model from Sharp - SHP1446. Alienware owners say AUO is better.

You should actually write this as a guide in the guides section. It's a bit difficult to follow here.

For those who're going to do this upgrade and buy AUO109B display from Ebay:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1hdNcHo...

Check this - there are fake AU Optronics displays on the market these days.

Always ask seller if their displays are original AUO.
