My mac lost its operating system how can I reinstall it?

My MacBook Pro shows a apple logo spinning wheel and progress bar on screen for about 3 minutes and then turns off. It need a operating system reinstalled. How can I do this?

Please give us your exact model. Some history of the machine can help. Did you just attempt a system upgrade. Does it tone on start up?
