Is there any way to retrieve pictures from a disabled iPhone?

Is it truly possible to interrupt a restore at the very beginning and be successful at retrieving photos from an iphone that has been disabled after an ios update?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

what do you mean by "disabled" ?

It's my dad's iphone5 and he claims he downloaded an ios update that caused it to become 'disabled.' The display says iphone disabled. According to everyone and every web discussion, it seems the only way to get the phone going again is to reset back to factory settings and sacrifice the data. However, I saw one comment that said if you start the restore then immediately cancel it, it will get the phone back to a point where you could backup/ download/ sync data. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and whether or not they had success.
