I experienced this with my dishwasher and after a $139 repair bill my rep explained pressing the "lock" button for 3 seconds as the manual says, is not long enough. Press it for 15-20 seconds clearly on top of the button area and the lock will release. Once that happened I was able to open the dishwasher door, select my wash cycle and press "start" and it ran like a dream. I wish I has called Whirlpool for trouble shooting tips as my manual does not have trouble shooting tips for this "lock" issue. I could tell my amazing repair rep was uncomfortable charging me, but the "warranty" on the instructions he gave me (that took 2 minutes) is good for a year. I wrote it up to a "learning experience" and I am happy to share it with Whirlpool faithful patrons.

Did you install the machine yourself, or did a service technician do it for you? I assume the washer is correctly powered and wired?

I don't have the dishwasher myself, but try taking a peek at the instruction manual here: http://www.manualsdir.com/manuals/496571...

It says the door latches closed automatically during the wash cycle, so maybe double check that the START/RESUME button isn't active and running.
