Mac will not boot up... blank white screen

Turn on mac.... chime sounds.... apple sign in the beginning... shows loading... goes half way then blank white screen.... how can I get mac to load and get home screen...??

Options

Boot from original install disk. Run disk utility. See if hard drive is ok.
