Over time the flapper - which is soft and supple new - becomes dry and hard. Replacing the flapper will normally fix a dripping issue, and it's about a 5 buck repair.

It may be time to replace the whole kit soon anyway. As there is no visible water leaking from the tank and no overflows ever, I just wonder what it might be.

It' cause of a bad flapper, it can't hold the in the tank and the water is dripping from the tank. You should replace the toilet flapper asap.
