Sim/SD Card reader damaged. Repair cost?

I got my Galaxy S4 for free from a friend, and would prefer to spend less than a new phone would cost. Would it cost any more or less to do the repair myself or take it to a shop and not risk damaging (or WORSE- BRICKING) my phone?

I'm dirt poor. This is my only phone. I'd really rather not screw it up further. I'm a smart kid though and COULD repair it myself. Like I mentioned though, I've got zero experience.

I don't know. What do you guys think?

i have changed these before ... its actually quite easy and I'm sure there is a guide on ifixit. the phone would have to be taken apart, and i can assure there is no micro soldering involved, the part is clip on clip off

Yep. Just need to make sure you separate the adhesive sticking on top of the metal plate and the sim card reader assembly before putting new one on.

Usually the new one comes with adhesive.

Make sure you get the exact model for your phone or else sim card and/or microSD card will not work at all as part will be incompatible if different model number from label on battery compartment or board / phone.

This is what the part looks like:
