do you mean the home button?big round button at bottom of screen?
if this is 3g/3gs take front display off following ifixit guide, turn display over and look at 2 gold prongs on back of home button. they may have become flattened with time. clean them and gently pry upwards a mm or 2, clean top of dock connector. if this doesn't work you'll need to replace the home button flex.(buy on ebay for few $)home button is secured by the front screen/digitiser so the flex can only be removed by taking the digitiser from the display unit. after that it's pretty straight forward. take care not to flatten prongs when putting them through gap in midframe
a less invasive answer is to download an app if your phone is jailbroken.
