Many auto parts stores have free engine light testing. They will hook up a tester to the OBD-II port on the car and can tell you what caused the engine light to come on and maybe tell you what you need to do to fix the problem. Many places like Oreilly's and Auto Zone offer this free service in hopes to sell you the replacement parts.
