stuck in kernel panic on boot

Hi !

I recently purchased a used MacBook pro 15" from 2011. The previous owner said that it keeps beeping 3 times at boot. I figured it's just a faulty RAM bar, which I had a spare one. He also stated that someone previously replaced the thermalpaste on the processor. When I got home and started testing the device it would turn on, get the loading bar about 3/4ths done and then crash with a kernel panic. Switching RAM around (using my previously unused RAM as well as 4 GB from my working MacBook 2008 ) didn't help much.

While trying to get a look at the heat sink i notice that one of the fan connectors was not attached anymore. Resoldering it yielded a now working fan but still the same errors.

After that I also took to replacing the thermal paste once again by myself. Also did not yield anything new.

I also tried resetting PRAM (alt+cmd+p+r) and SMC (although there is no feedback for that, so I might have done it wrong..).

When I finally figured out how to start AHT (Apple states is pressing 'D' while you actually have to press alt+d ) I ran the non-extensive test which also yielded no new information.

When trying to run a gparted live Thumbdrive it states that it could not find any processor, although I'm certain AHT would have noticed that.

So now, while the extended hardware test ist running I thought I would ask here what could have gone wrong. Please also see the logfile of the Kernel panic (extracted by switching the HDD to my working device):

When I have seen this problem on this model at mid boot 90% of the time it has been this issue: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro...

You'll probably have better luck at an ASP than Apple as the program is coming to a close and Apple has no incentive to help you but an ASP does.

Hey, thanks for the info, I'll Check it out in monday. I actually read about These issues but thought the Time Frame for free replacements was up already. So you think This is my issue? AHT didn't Output any errors...

by

AHT won't show it. They have to hook directly up to Apple to run the test. We are right at the end of the program. So you might want to know terms like "warranty exception", Apple never sent you a notification that your machine might be affected, right? This recall was a result of a class action law suit. Apple is no longer run by a man of integrity, Steve Jobs, it's run by a money loving guy Tim Cook that's pulling $100,000,000 a year out of customers and putting in his. pockets. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm located in Germany, so my mileage may vary, but the Article you linked is also available in German, so i Hope the repair will be free here, too. I also Hope the excellent soldering i did will not hinder anything. Anyhow, thanks a bunch, if they take it in on monday i will mark your answer.

Let me know if they don't, I may be able help further. I usually helps if you are a female and smell and look good. I know that's politically incorrect and sexist but so are men. If you are a guy, remember what Ap Capone said:

1. Capitalism is the legitimate racket of the ruling class. Al Capone

2. You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone. Al Capone

Well, I've been to the ASP today, the took the MacBook in and will message me whether or not the graphics chip is defect... might take up to 5 days. I'm still not convinced though, since there where no real graphics bugs. It just never booted "into anything", even gparted reported something about the cpu. But I guess we'll see. As stated I will accept your answer if it turns out to work. Otherwise I'll very gladly take other recommendations :o)
