HandOff Connection - Continuity Activation Tool

Hello guys!

I'm looking to let my iMac 27" Mid 2011 be able to work with HandOff, as the new OS Sierra approaches with new amazing features.

I've read that it is possible to use Continuity Activation Tool 2.0, but the problem is that I have an Atheros Wifi Card instead of the Broadcom .

If I understood correctly, I need to change the Wifi card with a Broadcom one and buy a specific BT dongle and run the CAT to be up and running .

Can someone help me with this giving me directions on how to do this?

Thanks! =)

Update (06/16/2016)

Thanks Dan!

I'd do the USB dongle + software part as it would be easier but I've read that Atheros Wifi Cards will not be compatible :(

Thanks for the answer!

I'll check out the kit

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

We had no problem with the dongle working with the AirPort board the system has. Were did you read that? I think they forgot about the need for the updated Bluetooth services (BT4.0).

I've seen it on the official GitHub repo of the CAT:

We'll I guess you'll need the kit to upgrade your system. It was over a year and a half ago when I did it we only did two systems for some VIP's as they wanted it. We did't get anyone else requesting it.

Did you review this web site: Continuity Activation Tool? It should answer the software side of the process.

As far as the hardware there are now a few kits you can order to upgrade your internal AirPort board to a dual WiFi/Bluetooth and remove the old BT board.

Here's a kit I had used: Apple Broadcom Bcm94360cd - 802.11 A/B/G/N/AC + Bluetooth 4.0 With Adapter For iMac 2009, iMac 2010 and iMac 2011.

As you noted you can also just use a BT dongle instead of altering your AirPort board. It's just a matter of what your needs are.

@danj - I'm getting old and you are obviously my superior on newer technology. I feel I still have you beat on the old stuff but that's besides the point. Would you explain the advantages of this or give a link to where I can better understand it? Thanks, Rich

@mayer - The difference is only the data rate of the upgraded WiFi (n Vs ac). The few systems we have setup with handoff services use the dongle. My own system at home is the only one I had upgraded the internal hardware as I wanted to understand if there was any difference with handoff.

@mayer - You may have me beat on the older G series systems & older Mac Pro's but I'll give you a good run on the Intel Mini's, MacBooks & MacBook Pro's ;-}

I would say you most likely get a good smattering of different stuff where the stuff I get is more focused on what my clients have. I also have the advantage of just popping in new logic boards vs debugging them.
