Is it possible to wire in a second battery where the optical drive is. I noticed there's more than enough space after removing it and have a old battery from the iPad first gen lying around and it could fit the space. Is there a way to wire it to the mother board or to the battery plug?

Jxd no there is not. You must consider that your battery and your computer actually communicate with each other. the second battery would not be detected or not properly charged. You are also risking damage to either the batteries or the computer by having one battery discharge into the other battery. This could cause the battery to swell, explode etc. My suggestion is do not try it unless you build a charging circuit as well as an overcharge protection etc. Leave it....:-)
