Mac asks to be powered down every time its turned on

I tried to replace the ram in my Macbook Pro with upgraded ram. It had 4gb already. After putting in new ram, it would not complete the boot sequence but just came up with "You need to power down your computer now. Press the power button....."

I replaced it with the original 4gb ram and tried again and now, it will not boot, but just returns to the same msg to power down the computer. Already tried Command-R at the boot sequence and that does no good.

Anyone know what's wrong or how to remedy this?

I've never heard of anything like this on a Mac except when running on battery power and it's about to shut down due to lack of power.

He may have had the system in sleep mode when he removed the RAM (forgetting to fully shut down the system) corrupting the OS. He will need to do a fresh OS install to fix that if he was lucky he didn't damage anything.
