Why are my tires locked up?

I have a craftsman yt 3000, 21 hp mower and have this problem. It will not roll, the tires seem to be locked up so I jacked it up and the tires spin freely, one in one direction the other in the other direction. Any idea what I've got going on?

It's very likely that it's related to the transmission or the drive belt, not the tires.

Here's some more info:

  • Check the clutch/brake travel. Are you sure you don't have the parking brake set when you are checking belt tension?
  • Do you have the little finger thingy sticking out of the rear plate that allows you to push by hand. Is that out or in?
  • It's possible that the pivot for the tensioner has rusted up, if it's been sitting. Getting under and eyeballing it should tell you.

the drive belt looks to be in place, why would the tires spin in opposite directions?

Because differential gear boxes : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOgoejxz... which are universally present on vehicles that have more than one drive wheel.
