My router supports connects of 10/100/1000 but my G6 is limited to 10/100. Can I replace the hardware in the laptop or should I get a USB 3.0 to Cat5 adapter from ebay? Thank you!

No, An adapter will not help. You are limited by the internal components.
Think of it in terms of a garden hose. Say the water pipe to the faucet (spigot ) is 1/2".
But you hook up a hose with a 3/4" diameter or a hose with a 3/8" diameter. You will be limited by the smallest diameter in the chain. Given that the pressure is the same.
