My computer tries to start up, but then shuts down. It gets as far as the screen with the grey apple and progress bar. When the bar is almost complete it shuts down. Does this every time!

Try inserting the original System Installation Disk on boot up and hold down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utilities and run repair.
