It's sometimes hard to tell if a phone screen is damaged internally. Sometimes in the corners you may see a small crack in the LCD screen which would the screen to not show any display or even backlight most of the time.
Usually when the phone still responds, the screen is faulty. Could also be caused by water damage. I suggest you bring it to a mobile phone repair shop to check the phone for any water damage.
