Phone enters reboot loop unless proximity sensor cable detached

After replacing my iPhone 5S display today, my phone started entering a reboot loop where I would get a red screen which would slowly fade to black, and then either shut off or reboot to the Apple logo and repeat. I did some research here and found others who reported that disconnecting the proximity cable seemed to get the phone out of the reboot loop.

I tried this, and was able to successfully boot my phone and restore it. None of the threads I found here seemed to have an answer as to WHY disconnecting the proximity sensor cable works, but it seems to. I hate think that I've just replaced one problem with another. At least prior to replacing the display, I had a mostly functioning phone. Is there any way to determine what is causing the infinite reboot when the proximity sensor cable is attached?

Did you mix up the screws for the metal shield that keeps the display cables down? If you mix the screws up, a longer screw in the lower right side will cause board damage. If you follow the iFixit guide, this Warning is listed.

Sometimes you can fix it with just using the right screws again, but otherwise you will need board servicing.

Nope, I kept track of exactly which screw came from which hole in the metal shield. I know I got the right ones in the right slot

So you think the board is damaged?

It may be worth replacing the whole flex cable, a little hotswap goes a long way in this scenario.

That looks like a pretty difficult operation. Have you done it before with any success?

It's not so bad! Use a black-stick and some ESD safe tweezers, it took me about 10-15 minutes to do my first one. Use a Grounding Strap too.

Buy two of them, they're like 8 dollars. :)

I haven't encountered a reason to do this yet.
