Well, all machines had onboard Ethernet that was attatched to the motherboard. The 56k modem was an option, that almost always came preinstalled, and was not connected to the motherboard, but the port was mounted in the same area as the motherboard ports. 802.11b Airport PCMCIA-style cards were also available, and could be installed into the PCMCIA slot on the motherboard.
