Is it safe to install an ethernet card?

My DIGITAL Starion 910 has the Pentium proccesor it came with, and has either Windows 2000 or XP. Even if it does have 2000, is it safe to install an ethernet(RJ45) card? RAM is pretty good, as this PC is capable of high quality gaming, multitasking, etc. Please let me know wether or not it is safe.
