Why is the engine light coming on and off on my Deisel

If this is newer than a 1996 then the light your talking about I assume is the service engine light or MIL yellow or orange. If this light comes on and goes out it is usually a sensor that is close to picking a code but the necessary criteria for the code is changing for example if its a mass airflow sensor it could be affected by the weather or change in altitude . If you live in a cold area it could be something as simple as moisture thats freezing in your gas cap making the evap sensor think theres a problem .If its on and off its not to the point were its an issue yet If however you have a engine light flashing on and off thats red you need to stop driving the car and get it to a mechanic

Hi,
Get an auto mechanic (Autozone?) to connect an appropriate (for your vehicle) diagnostic scanner tool on the OBDII port of the vehicle. It displays what codes are being presented by the Engine Management Control Module. The code(s) (which are stored by the EMCM) will enable him/her to find out what is going on with your engine.
