To do this you have to remove the optical drive and use one of these: http://www.ifixit.com/search?x=12&y=6&te...

As far as the heat sensors are concerned, I dont think that would be an issue because you are simply replacing the optical drive, which does not necessitate heat sensors. SSD's have no moving parts, therefore they generate little to no heat.

mayer's solution works for many new imacs (and some laptops too, i did that for my macbookpro 13"), but in particular it's not the only one available for the iMac 27" mid 2010, and probably not the cleanest; as the questions has been asked when mid 2010 iMacs were already available, i guess spou was looking for this solution instead (that, as far as i know, is only for mid 2010 iMacs 27"):

You can have 3 drives: a ssd, a hd and an optical drive (they normally sell this configuration in the official applestore). To reproduce this configuration without buying it ready from apple, you need a special mounting part to hold the extra drive, that's included only in imacs sold with both ssd and hd; this means that you can replace the extra drive as usual if you buy an imac already having both ssd and hd, but you can't normally add the extra drive on an imac sold with only the hd and optical drive if you can't buy the missing part somewhere.

Short: you can buy the i7 imac with the extra drive and normally replace both the ssd and the hd, or you can buy a hd-only imac, buy the additional mounting part, buy a good ssd, and finally follow an online guide to install it (and that's the reason because i'm browsing ifixit today: i was looking for that guide, but i still couldn't find it)

Searching on the web and asking a friend working for an apple store, he said they call that part "the wall mount for ssd", so i guessed it may be this one (just because it's the only part with named "wall something" that's compatible only with 27" iMac mid 2010): https://www.applecomponents.com/items/92...

Check this too: http://blog.macsales.com/6332-27”-mid-20...

Please correct me if something is wrong, i'm very interested to this topic, i want to get a 3-drives imac without spending the enormous amount of money apple asks (+650 euros..)

Installed a 120 GB SSD (OWC Extreme Pro) sided to a 500 GB Momentum XT using OWC's DataDoubler in my late 2009 MacBook Pro 13". Everything went smooth. OWC has a great tutorial video feature. Then I configured the drives to work as a RAID JBOD, giving me 600 GB of storage, and the boot and app load time are still blazing fast.

One problem though: the safe sleep when the battery goes down does not work anymore. Tried to reset the SMC but no go. Any suggestions? I think it has something to do with the Momentum HD being located in the Superdrive bay...

Does anyone know if the extra SSD space of mid 2010 27" iMAc is also in late 2009 iMacs? In other words:

I have a late 2009 iMAc and I would like to add an SSD without replacing the combo DVD... do you think it is possible?

At the moment I think I'll substitute the HD with an SSD...

Ekl's answer is correct…if you have a July 2010 iMac 27-inch rather than the October 2009 model. I'd suggest the following link for further details before going with a solution that requires the removal of the main 3.5-inch hard drive or optical drive (unless you do in fact have the 2009 model, in which case those would be your only options):

http://ssd.youds.com/

The author provides suggestions on parts and presents fairly solid teardown and upgrade instructions for the 2010 27-inch iMacs. I used the above site as a reference during my own 27-inch iMac SSD upgrade, utilizing the third internal SATA port.

Hope that helps!

Jason.
