iMac 27 inch videocard replacement due to vertical stripes on screen

Hi all,

Since last week i got vertical stripes on my imac.

Apple said its due to the 6970m 2gb failure but my mac is out of warrenty for it. Also for the recall a while ago.

I checked the internet but an replacement would cost me 600-800 usd. Which would not make sense on a 2.000 usd machine of nearly 5 years old.

Do you know if your stuck with the apple card or could you repair this with a dell 6970m card 2gb ram that is only 150-200 usd?

Else it will be my last mac as this is crazy expensive to repair:(

Thanks for your thoughts!

I'd would contact Apple directly on this as I cannot find where the recall has been cancelled and it was still valid last March, 2015, when Apple published this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203787

See if your serial number qualifies:

The last four characters of the serial number must contain one of the following groups (for example, xxxxxxxxDHJQ):

DHJQ, DHJW, DL8Q, DNGH, DNJ9, or DMW8

DPM1, DPM2, DPNV, DNY0, DRVP, DY6F, F610

Hi!

Thank you for your answer. My serialnumber is on the list you mentioned.

I will try contacting apple again. They first responded that my four years expired 6 months ago.

But as this is a faulty card i will ask them to replace it for free or for a small fee as this is a manufacturing issue.

Thanks.

Tim, if you have to, ask for senior advisor. Mention the term "warranty exception", that failing mention the class action law suit. After all it doesn't come out of their pocket but the GPU manufacture's.

Please keep us informed as to your experience with Apple. This could help others.

This really helped me out as I just started having this problem on my 27" imac, five years after original purchase. The genius bar people were not able to help but a call to apple allowed a warranty exception code to be added to the case, and I'm getting it repaired for free now. Great to have this answer here. Thanks.

Hi mayer,

They first told me to pay the full amount.

If they do they do that dont agreeand mention mayers tip.

In the end they offered me 80% discount. That was the best I could get after a long comversation.

Having the same issue with my IMac. I just came back from the apple genuis bar and as expected, they can't do anything. Giving a call monday in order to see if they can do it for free. Mayer, you were saying that i have to mention de term warranty exception? was there a class action lawsuit aswell?

Samuel, how did this go for you? My iMac just showed this a couple of months ago and now it won't turn on.
