cannot access iphone. asks for passcode which i never entered..i had done a upgrade through settings as requested. but now i cannot use the phone at all

Have you reset the iPhone? Try putting the phone into recovery mode and resetting all the settings. However, be aware that you will loose all personal data from the phone if it is not backed up. Also note that you will need the iCloud account details that the phone is currently paired to, so you can reactivate the iPhone once it has been reset. Good luck!
