factory restored, MacBook stuck after software update

I bought a used macbook 1.1 (a1181) It was restored to factory settings. When I got home, the keyboard was not responding (the track pad did though) I updated the software. It had 9 software updates, including a huge one to the os. It downloaded all night..this morning it asked for a reboot, which I did. Since then it has been stuck on the grey screen, with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. The keyboard might still be unresponsive, I plugged in a usb external (non apple) keyboard. Tried to reboot in safe mode, tried to run diagnostic, and inserted the original disks...and still stuck...and now the disk is stuck inside as well. I bought this mac for my daughter as a Chrsitmas gift..please help me save our Christmas..thanks in advance

Answer this question I have this problem too

I have no idea how many versions of those programs have been released. What operating system are you running?

have you tried another working hard drive? could be a hard drive failure!

PS * also try disconnecting the battery and doing a pram reset or smc reset

no I have not, as I don't have one. I can't do the pram reset, the keyboard is unresponsive, my external keyboard is not an apple

first try a new hard drive. I had similar issues that the keyboard and everything stopped working because of the hard drive. They are regular SATA drives you can replace

honestly..this was meant for Christmas..being so close, I'm just going to chuck it and find something else for her. Thanks for your help
