Boot gets stuck on the gray screen before usual desktop appearance

Hi there,

my iMac suddenly stopped working (no cursor movement, no keyboard feedback, nothing), got stuck and I rebooted it manually.

After that, the boot process ends and gets stuck on a completely gray screen, after the startup sound, apple and loading bar.

I tried almost all software solutions (NVRAM reset, HD Recovery, incompatible .kext deletion).

The only way I'm able to boot the iMac is in SAFE MODE.

During summer I noticed some graphic glitches, that's why I believe the problem is hardware related and caused by GPU or something related to graphic.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Think about it. If it boots in Safe Mode, it's not a hardware issue.

I looked at your link. They're guessing. Set up an external startup drive and install a clean system and boot from it. See if the problem persists.

After some readings I understood it's about advanced graphic drivers that Safe Mode doesn't use. Any fix for it?

What operating system are you running? Can you give a link to this reading?

Yes sure, for example this: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions...

I'm running El Capitan.

Thanks

Did it do this with a lower operating system?

I have a similar situation except it starts only in recovery mode. I format the the original portion, instal EL Capitan again but same results. I tried to boot from external hard disk, but it didn't work either. Hard drive test in recovery mode showed a healthy OK hard drive. Not starting in single user mode, Not starting in diagnostic mode, not starting from external hard disk. What could it be? Thanks for any suggestions.
