Do I have a dead battery?

Purchased my iPod new but just recently tried using it, 1.5 years later. It seems to work fine when hooked up to a computer or other power source. Unplugged, nothing. Did I wait too long to charge the battery to the point where it won't hold a charge? I've tried changing batteries before but was not successful with the soldering type.

Thanks

Hugo

Probably. Lithium-Ion (/ LiPoly) batteries have a limited shelf life of ... about a year and a half, depending on how well you take care of them.

iFixit has a guide on replacing the battery, but it requires detailed soldering work, so that may not be your best option.

If you're in the U.S., it looks like Apple will replace your battery for $59 (see iPod Service Prices), though you may be able to find other people who can do it more cheaply.

perfect answer, most of the time on these nano's if they work when plugged in but not when the power is removed it's simply the battery. although sometimes it can be something more sinister like liquid damage. but i certainly doesn't sound like that in this case.
